Just about everything needed for cabin camping will be needed for tent camping. If you haven't already, please refer to the cabin camping page for basic equipment. Tent camping only requires a few additional items, assuming it is mild weather. In my area, we don't put new Scouts outside in real cold weather but it may be different in your area. Look for a cold weather page at Thrifty-Scout in the future.
In addition to the cabin camping equipment, your Scout will need the following for tent camping:
- A Tent and/or Tent partner: Some Troops provide tents as crew gear and most will use the buddy system in tents, especially for younger Scouts. Your Scout will need to know if he is expected to provide a tent or if one is being provided. If he needs one, I suggest keeping it simple and inexpensive for beginners. A 2-person tent is a good choice, small enough to carry with room for a tent partner or gear/clothes. A good tent will include a rain fly and include stakes for securing to the ground. It is a good idea for your Scout to set the tent up at home on a nice sunny (preferably calm wind) day. When returning from camp, a tent needs to be thoroughly dried before being put away, otherwise it will mildew.
- Sleeping Pad: A sleeping pad provides a small degree of comfort when sleeping on the ground. More importantly, it helps insulate the body from the relatively cool ground. Thicker is generally better as long as it can be rolled and carried. Self-inflating pads are also popular, they can be a little more comfortable but don't insulate from the cool ground as well. I have returned to the basic foam pad for most of my trips, they are easier to pack, store, and maintain.
- Ground Cloth: Even the best tents need a ground cloth to stay dry and to protect the tent. A tarp or heavy sheet plastic just smaller than the tent footprint is all you need. REI has an inexpensive tarp and similar items can be found at your local big box stores.
Once your Scout is set up for tent camping, he should be prepared for most Scout trips. As he grows and gains experience, he may consider more advanced or high adventure level Scouting. Look for more information on these subjects coming to Thrifty-Scout in the future.
